Damien Gillis reports from Duncan, BC on the final leg of the historic "Get Out Migration" walk for wild salmon as it rolls into Victoria for a final rally on May 8.

It seems fitting with the launch of The Common Sense Canadian that we ponder Tom Paine and the Current State of Canadian Civil Liberties. What he man who used the term Common Sense as the title of his revolutionary pamphlet on freedom and revolution might make out of the current state of Canadian “civil rights”.

Site 'C' and Other Bad Ideas for BC

Written by Rafe Mair - Thursday, 29 April 2010
Premier Gordon Campbell doesn’t care for the environment other than when it can serve foreign hunters shooting Grizzly Bears, allow Norwegian companies to ravage our waters with fish farms, serve offshore companies he can give our rivers to, or land for his developer friends.

There are many reasons to oppose this blacktop boondoggle: it destroys precious farmland, dislocates people, demolishes habitat of threatened species. It increases pollution and congestion, and encourages real estate speculation.

Carpe Diem, BC!

This, as they say, is the moment we've all been waiting for. As biologist Alexandra Morton embarks this week on a historic walk for wild salmon down Vancouver Island, her journey serves as a symbol to the people of this province that the game is truly afoot. Now is the time to reclaim this place we call British Columbia from those who have stolen it from us.

Site C, HST and truth in B.C. politics

The Campbell Liberals' decision to proceed with Site C is almost as bad as their Harmonized Sales Tax scam because it's obvious from the content of the Site C announcement that it's premature - before the proper studies have been done - and so is mainly a PR ploy to try to distract public attention away from the popular revolt against the HST.

On the eve of the kick-off of the "Get Out Migration", Rafe Mair wishes Alex Morton Godspeed and urges all British Colombians to join her on her historic trek down Vancouver Island.

A world-renown tourism destination and home to all five species of pacific salmon, multiple species of trout, and 200 plant and animal species, the Taku is threatened by a plan to re-open a 50 year-old mine.

Premier Campbell's decision to go ahead with Site "C" demonstrates what I've said all over the province and written for anyone who will print it for nearly three years: "Run of River, better stated as private power initiatives, will not supply power to BC Hydro because it produces its power during the run-off when BC Hydro doesn't need it!"

An audio discussion about turning Fish Lake into a dump for a proposed mine, and larger issues of water quality and aquatic policy in Canada.

Fish Lake: A battle worth fighting

Written by Rafe Mair - Wednesday, 14 April 2010
What the hell sort of society have we become when we would even consider killing 85,000 Rainbow Trout so that a mining company could dump its tailings and assorted crud in their lake - and not see the black humour in their offer to build another lake?

Damien Gillis guest hosted Vancouver Co-op Radio on April 14 and discussed with Alexandra Morton her upcoming "Get Out Migration."

Seven different First Nations moved forward toward certification of their class action lawsuit against the BC and Canadian governments - to protect their traditional territory in the Broughton Archipelago from the impacts of salmon farms on wild salmon.

Co-founders of TheCanadian.org Rafe Mair and Damien Gillis joined Sean Holman of Public Eye Online on his Sunday CFAX radio program. The pair discussed a range of topics, including their new site, the state of the media today, and key environmental stories in BC - including fish farms and the plan to turn Fish Lake into a toxic dump for mining.
