John Cummins. MP, Delta-Richmond East (Conservative), a former commercial fisherman, has called into question the appointment of four men to the Cohen Inquiry into the collapse of the Fraser River sockeye with the mandate to inquire into, amongst other things, the actions or non-actions of the Department of Fisheries and Oceans.

At the end of last year's disastrous season for Fraser River sockeye returns, Dr. Daniel Pauly addressed a number of questions and theories surrounding the grave situation. Government officials and spokespeople for the salmon farming industry were quick to dismiss concerns about impacts from open net salmon farms on wild salmon migratory routes by shifting the blame to factors over which we have less control, like global warming.

Successful HST initiative: What now?

Written by Rafe Mair - Thursday, 10 June 2010
Because it’s certain that the anti-HST committee will reach its statutory requirements, two interesting questions arise: first what the government will do; and second, if they don’t call a referendum, what will the “anti's” do then?

What did the Campbell government know about the other jurisdictions concerning sea lice? It can be said without fear of contradiction that even the most superficial look at the industry in Norway, Scotland and Ireland would have disclosed that the impact of sea lice from farmed fish on migrating salmonid smolts was a huge problem.

Damien Gillis discusses the historic Get Out Migration, the end game of getting salmon farms off BC's coast, and other matters re: the Common Sense Canadian - with host Sylvia Richardson on SFU radio last week.

The biologist and author Arnaud Apoteker asks, "How can we know the long-term effects when these products were only put on the market four or five years ago? I believe a handful of multinationals are conducting a health and epidemiological experiment on the whole human race."

Rafe Mair interviews former Socred cabinet colleague and BC Premier Bill Vander Zalm for TheCanadian.org on the campaign to stop the HST. Watch this fascinating ten minute discussion covering why the HST is bad for British Colombians and how this historic initiative can defeat the controversial tax.

Saturday May 8, 2010 was a fantastic day for all of us who want fish farms out of our waters. It all came together at Centennial Square in Victoria, culminating in a march on the Legislature. This was more than just a protest, although that it certainly was that. The obvious event was the end of Alexandra Morton’s march from her home in Sointula to Victoria.

Greenpeace Canada and other environmental groups and citizens gathered outside the regional office of Enbridge in downtown Vancouver to say no to the company's proposal to pump bitumen from the Tar Sands across BC and into coastal supertankers in the Great Bear Rainforest.

We are now headlong into a province of private power with rates set not by what it costs BC Hydro to generate power but what California, indeed what the market says the price is. And I feel white-hot rage and bountiful sorrow. For here is the end of W.A.C. Bennett's legacy, his dream for BC.

Watch this 2 min promo for Alexandra Morton's "Get Out Migration" final rally in Victoria on May 8 - featuring the hit song "Walking to Victoria" by Sointula's Backbone Road, and footage from this historic walk for wild salmon all the way down Vancouver Island!

The Common Sense Canadian's video coverage of the historic walk for wild salmon down Vancouver Island, culminating in Victoria on May 8. Wild salmon advocates take to the streets and take on big Norwegian corporations to take back their wild salmon.

Damien Gillis reports from Duncan, BC on the final leg of the historic "Get Out Migration" walk for wild salmon as it rolls into Victoria for a final rally on May 8.
